Art & culture
Saarbrücken has a wide variety of museums. The Saarland Museum with its Old Collection and Modern Gallery features some important 20th century works. The State Gallery which focuses on works by Saarland artists and those working in the region, and the Civic Gallery with its kaleidoscope of contemporary art and performance art, are both worth visiting. Saarland Museum
The Old Collection in the Saarland Museum boasts around 450 works of art from south-west Germany, Alsace and Lorraine dating from the early Middle Ages to 1900. The Modern Gallery features a collection of important 20th century art with a special emphasis on German and French impressionist painting. Works by painters of the "Bridge" movement and the "Blue Rider" school, such as the "The Little Blue Horse" by Franz Marc are among the collection's highlights. The museum also houses works by leading artists of the German informalist school. State Gallery
