Most people have heard of the Song of the Nibelungs and the story of Siegfried, Kriemhild, Brunhild and Hagen, the account of their life, festivals and feuds. Today, these are still popular themes and the subject of many a historical discussion. The Song of the Nibelungs was a medieval hit that was often recited, especially at events such as medieval tournaments that are frequently re-enacted today. Together, the two routes that link Worms am Rhein and Würzburg form a magnificent circuit of approximately 310 kilometres. It was here, in the former kingdom of Burgundy, that one of the oldest legends - the Nibelungs saga - originated. Dating from the 12th century, it has endured down the centuries. The saga tells of love, death and jealousy, of Siegfried's fight with the dragon, the feud between Kriemhild and Brunhild, and Siegfried's death at the hands of Hagen von Tronje.
The Nibelungs set off from their temporary capital, Worms, on one of the two routes to Würzburg and the kingdom of the Huns to see Attila on the banks of the Danube. Along this route, you'll step back in time to the Middle Ages and discover all the wonderful places through which the Nibelungs wandered and the forests in which they hunted. Explore one of Germany's most magnificent areas of countryside with its gently rolling vineyard slopes, dense forests and enchanting river scenery, as well as historic towns, glorious churches, mysterious palaces, castles and ruins. The Song of the Nibelungs is more than 800 years old and consists of ancient historic tales intertwined with even older legends.
