The people of Schwangau still observe customs handed down over the generations. On special occasions local associations wear traditional costume and brass bands play. St. Coloman's day and the Viehscheid cattle drive with their origins in local culture and old traditions and are now celebrated as public festivals Concerts at Neuschwanstein Castle
The Troubadours' Hall, a copy of the famous one at Wartburg Castle, is the largest room in the castle. It was intended as a venue for celebrations, principally musical occasions with a large audience, but was never used for that purpose during the king's lifetime. The baroque Church of St. Coloman on the outskirts of Schwangau was built in its present form in the 17th century. In the summer of the year 1012 St. Coloman, an Irish pilgrim, rested here on his way to the Holy Land. St Coloman's feast day, celebrated on the second Sunday in October, has probably been amalgamated with the tradition of a horseback parade dating back to the 16th century. More than 200 beautifully groomed horses - most of them ridden by people in traditional dress - take part. "Viehscheid" cattle drive
Every year the return of the cows and calves to the valley is celebrated as a great occasion in the Allgäu. Traditionally the young stock spend the short Alpine summer on the mountain pastures in the high valleys around Schwangau. In the middle of September there is a celebration to welcome them back down into the plain and a great public festival is held.
