Suggested excursions
A place where you can let go of your thoughts and find true tranquillity enjoy a cascade of colours, invigorating air and a fresh sea breeze, with fantastic natural scenery and expansive waters as far as the eye can see. This region's charming appeal stems from its lighthouses, windmills, rape fields, black and white Frisian cows, dike sheep and trees that have been bent toward the ground by sea winds, known as windlooper in these parts. Ocean Wave adventure pool
With eight huge portholes on its outside wall and a ship's railing on the first floor, stepping into this adventure pool is almost like stepping onto a grandiose ship. People of all ages will love the array of water-based attractions, which include a seawater wave pool, a giant slide, a counter-current pool, a massage pool and sauna facilities. On the trail of Klaus Störtebeker
The Störtebeker Route is the longest scenic driving route on the southern North Sea coast. It runs directly beside the dikes from the Ems River to the Elbe River and is named after the infamous pirate Klaus Störtebeker. Explore the history of this infamous pirate and his freebooters who were the scourge of the Baltic and North seas around the turn of the 14th century. Windmill country
Windmills have been part and parcel of the East Frisian landscape for hundreds of years now, and have now been restored to their former glory. The 250km Frisian Mill Tour is the best way to see the region's most famous landmarks as well as the fabulous natural scenery. The route follows dike tracks along the Wattenmeer coastal mudflats, taking in verdant areas of reclaimed land, clinker-paved lanes, hedge-topped embankments common in these coastal heathland areas, and straight-as-an-arrow fen drainage canals with their bascule bridges. There's simply so much to discover and experience in this lowland region, from ancient castles, palaces, manor houses and medieval brick-built churches to picture-postcard harbour towns, former royal seats, villages built on reclaimed land and sleepy hamlets.
