Art & culture
As the political and cultural centre for Sorbs and Wends in the Brandenburg region, Cottbus has had strong Sorbian influences. Visitors can learn much more about this at the Wendish Museum. A rich and varied cultural scene with everything from the state theatre and the academy of music to numerous museums and galleries is guaranteed to make your stay here a memorable one. Cottbus State Theatre
Cottbus State Theatre is housed in one of the most beautiful art nouveau theatre buildings in Europe. This multi-genre theatre has three different venues offering a varied programme with a wide range of performances. Awarded the title of State Theatre at the beginning of the 1990s, this is the only theatre in the Brandenburg region to have received the honour. Dieselkraftwerk Art Museum
Formerly known as the Cottbus Brandenburg Art Collections, the Dieselkraftwerk Art Museum houses works from the world of painting, sculpture, graphics, photography and poster art. The museum has ten or twelve temporary exhibitions a year. These are principally based around the themes of countryside, space, nature and the environment, and cover a whole range of styles, from classical modernism to contemporary art. The museum is particularly concerned with providing special services aimed at teaching children and young people to appreciate art. Wendish Museum
This contemporary museum is housed in a restored town house with neo-classical elements close to the Altmarkt. It gives visitors an insight into the culture and history of the Sorbs and the Wends of Lower Lusatia. The exhibits range from traditional costume, literature, art and music to the customs and way of life of this Slavic people. There are also a number of special exhibitions on themes relating to history, folklore and art.
