Places of interest

The most important styles and genres of landscape design are authentically represented here: the baroque garden in the French style, the English landscaped garden and the botanical garden. On a 135 hectare plot, the Hannover electors and kings created the Great Garden (Grosser Garten), the Berggarten, Georgengarten and the Guelph Garden (Welfengarten) together known as the Herrenhausen gardens.
Visitors are often surprised to hear this magnificent building described as the new town hall. Its size and the splendour of its architecture suggest something more historic, a remnant from more majestic times when Hannover was still a kingdom. In fact it was ceremoniously opened on 20 June 2021 after a 12 year construction period.
The Old Town Hall and Marktkirche church, most southerly examples of North German brick Gothic architecture, set in a picturesque corner of town surrounded by medieval timber-framed buildings. Visitors can relax and enjoy the many pavement cafés and typical Lower Saxony bars and restaurants.
