Art & culture
The many facets of Karlsruhe as a cultural centre can be appreciated by visiting the fascinating, interactive Centre for Arts and Media (ZKM), the State Art Gallery, the City Gallery and the Majolica pottery. Karlsruhe also offers high-quality opera in the Baden State Theatre and a variety of new works at smaller theatres specialising in light entertainment, musicals, cabaret or puppet theatre. Centre for Arts and Media - ZKM
The Centre for Art and Media (ZKM) offers a remarkable blend of art, science and technology, bringing together the world of pictures, music and words and relating them to the new information and communication technologies. Visitors are invited to take part with a number of interactive installations and activities. State Art Gallery
The State Art Gallery contains paintings and sculptures stretching back over six centuries, mostly from France, Germany and the Netherlands. It originally consisted of the collections from the former Badensian royal residence. Margravine Caroline Luise collected a large number of Dutch and French paintings, founding the "Mahlerey Cabinet" in the 18th century. The Museum of Prints and Drawings has more than 80,000 works and is one of the oldest collections of graphic art in Europe. Baden State Theatre
One of the city's most famous and celebrated buildings is the Baden State Theatre at Ettlinger Tor, right next to market square. The multifunctional theatre offers a broad range of operas, operettas, musicals, ballet, plays, concerts and lieder evenings, with a special children's programme for Christmas.
