Art & culture
Even without the "documenta" exhibition, Kassel would still be one of the leading art locations in Europe. Wilhelmshöhe Palace houses one of the largest and most important Rembrandt collections along with the famous statue of Apollo. However, it is the "documenta" art exhibition that has really put Kassel on the international map. Museum at Wilhelmshöhe Palace
Wilhelmshöhe Palace contains an Old Masters gallery, a collection of antiquities and the Weissenstein museum. The Old Masters collection includes works by Rembrandt and van Dyck. "documenta" art exhibition
Today, it's hard to imagine Kassel's cultural scene without the inimitable influence of the documenta, the most important temporary exhibition of contemporary art in the world which takes place every five years. Kassel State Theatre
The history of Kassel State Theatre began with the Ottoneum. Built in 1604 as the first established theatre on the continent, the Shakespeare Company made a guest appearance here on its way from London to Prague. The electoral opera house was built in 1765 on the site of Prince Maximilian's palais. Today, Kassel State Theatre is a multifunctional venue with an A-list orchestra, dance and music theatre, and playhouse.
