Suggested excursions
As the area around Constance includes Lake Constance and the river Rhine there are many beautiful places to visit on daytrips in the region. The two main attractions on Lake Constance are without doubt the islands of Mainau and Reichenau. A visit to the largest waterfall in Europe on the river Rhine at Neuhausen in Switzerland is also an unforgettable experience. Flower Island of Mainau
The flower island of Mainau, which lies in the northern arm of Lake Constance, offers its visitors a splendid display of flowers all year round. Among the exotic delights you can find on the island are palms and orange trees, and you can marvel at the majestic palace which is set in one of the most beautiful parks in Europe as well as the largest butterfly house in Germany. Reichenau Island
The largest island on Lake Constance is famous for its historical buildings and its vineyards, orchards and vegetable farms. But its diverse birdlife also attracts many visitors each year. Thousands of birds from across Europe use Wollmatinger Ried, one of the largest nature conservation areas in Germany, as a rest area during their annual migration. The island's mild climate makes it an ideal recreation area. Rhine Falls at Neuhausen
The largest waterfall in Europe - the Rhine Falls - is located around 60 kilometres from Constance, near the Swiss town of Neuhausen. On average 700 cubic metres of water tumble over the 23 metre high falls every second. Every year on the 1st of August, Swiss National Day, a huge fireworks display is held at the waterfall.
