Nature & greenery
Landau is surrounded by many green spaces which lie like a garland round a large part of the town centre. The parks were mainly created during the time that Landau castle was being dismantled and are where you can find numerous species of flowers and plants as well as rare types of tree and other botanical delights. The animal world is also represented with Landau zoo and the "Reptilium", Germany's largest reptile zoo. Landau zoo
Only five minutes walk from Landau town centre and right next to the historic fortress, the zoo is a great destination for family outings and recreation. The zoo has more than 100 species of animals, mostly exotic, numbering around 550 creatures in total, and is one of the Palatinate region's special attractions. The grounds of the zoo cover four hectares of land containing a rich diversity of animals in enclosures similar to their natural habitats as well as a fascinating variety of trees, shrubs and other types of plant. The petting area is particularly popular with children. Kreuzgarten
When the Kreuzgarten was radically re-designed at the start of the new millennium it became another gem of an urban park. The garden is next to the church of St. Augustine, is enclosed within a cloister and was modelled on an ancient design. In the middle of the garden is fountain which is actually a baptismal font dating back to around 1700. The Kreuzgarten is a very pleasant place to spend a few hours. Reptilium
The Reptilium is an exciting zoological park containing exhibits on the fascinating and extraordinary world of reptiles and amphibians. You can observe the individual species in their water-filled tanks and gain insights into their strange and fascinating world. There is also the opportunity to handle some of the animals which is a very special experience! Through guided tours you can learn more about the behaviour of different species, and how they live, reproduce and feed.
