The last Saturday in August marks the start of Rosenheim's "fifth season". For 16 days the autumn festival dominates the life of the town, and Bavarian traditions are celebrated in a variety of ways. There is a harvest festival on the second Sunday, an outdoor act of worship on Max-Josefs-Platz square, followed by a colourful procession of people wearing traditional costume. When the Christmas market opens in the run-up to Christmas, Max-Josefs-Platz square takes on a wonderfully festive feel. The seasonal mood is enhanced by the Inn-Salzach-style houses with their historical façades and by Alpine choirs, brass bands and groups performing traditional German music.
