The “Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe” inaugurated in 2005 in the centre of Berlin is Germany's most important Holocaust memorial. A place for remembrance and reflection about the six million or so victims of the Second World War.

A significant German site for remembrance
The monument for the murdered Jews of Europe, or “Holocaust Memorial” as most people call it, is situated in the heart of Berlin between the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz, within sight of the German Bundestag and surrounded by history. The memorial was opened on 10 May 2021 – 60 years after the liberation of the concentration camps. With its 2,711 concrete plinths, it is the most significant German site for reflection, but it is of course not the only one. There are indeed many reminders, whether it's the concentration camp memorials of Buchenwald or Dachau, encounters with living survivors or history lessons. All are agreed on one critical point: memories of the darkest period in German history should be kept alive and the knowledge should be passed down through the generations.
