The ducal town of Gifhorn, the southern gateway to the Lüneburg Heath is much more than a picture-postcard destination, it's also an ideal base to get out and enjoy the surrounding sights. Whether you're walking, cycling, on horseback or even in a cosy horse-drawn carriage, there are many places to discover in this magical heathland region. Hear the clattering of gears along the Lower Saxony Mills Route, enjoy a safari experience at Serengeti Park, or explore a world-class automotive exhibition in Wolfsburg. Lower Saxony Mills Route
The Lower Saxony Mills Route runs for around 250 kilometres from the open moorland and marshes of the Teufelsmoor (Devil's Moor) through the eastern lowlands to Celle and Gifhorn, the two former ducal towns in the South Heath region. Along the way there are 75 romantic mills, not to mention the tranquil valleys of the upper heathland, the vegetable fields in the Bardowick fenlands and the Elbe river valley meadows. See the salt town of Lüneburg, timber-framed architecture and the Hannover Wendland with its "circle villages". Explore the course of the Ilmenau river, the South Heath woodlands and the Celle countryside where you'll find the Aller river marshland. Hodenhagen Serengeti Park
More than 1,000 big game animals await you at Germany's biggest safari park. Experience Africa at its finest as you drive through the reserve in your own vehicle or on the Serengeti Bus the animals will often gaze curiously through your windows as you pass. This zoological wonderland gives you a first-hand look at giraffes, rhinos, camels and many other exotic creatures. There's also a special effects extravaganza called the Jungle Safari Tour, featuring realistic lion and rhino attacks, a hair-raising encounter with an African tribe and a burning bridge that's about to collapse. People with disabilities can enjoy the park on a wheelchair-friendly tour. VW Autostadt, Wolfsburg
More VW Beetles have been produced than any other model of car in the world, and its latest incarnation is just one of the vehicles on show at Autostadt's handover centre. Volkswagens automotive theme park is a paradise for petrol heads, located right by the Mittelland Canal. Featuring contemporary architecture and landscaped gardens, it's the world's largest interactive exhibition dedicated to the motor vehicle. Set in 25 hectares of parks and lakeland next to the manufacturer's Wolfsburg factory, it provides fun, entertainment and historical perspectives, as well as a look ahead to the future. Highlights include pavilions themed around famous marques, cinema presentations, the interactive AutoLab, winding walkways, restaurants, and the MobiVersum centre for kids.
