Situated in the heart of the commercial centre around the Rhine and Main rivers, the Main-Taunus district is part of the Upper Taunus nature reserve and offers a whole host of fascinating and charming contrasts. Its proximity to Frankfurt, the region's main business centre, was and still is responsible for the rich, varied and sustainable development of this cultural landscape. Of all the rivers and streams in the nature reserve, the Lahn is particularly interesting for the canoeing fraternity.
The Limes fortifications run along the full length of the nature reserve from east to west. Situated in the heart of the nature reserve is the Vogelburg, a very special bird park that for decades has dedicated its efforts to caring for and breeding parrots. The river Main converges with the Rhine near Mainz. Running for a total of 524 km, it is one of the Rhine's main tributaries.
Along the banks of the Main, there are plenty of leisure facilities for the locals to enjoy. With its cocktail bars and garden restaurants, some stretches of the river are also great places for a gentle stroll. You'll meet people of all nationalities here, out walking, inline skating, cycling or picnicking.
With around 40 museums along both banks of the Main, the museum embankment in Frankfurt is a remarkable cultural attraction. You'll also find cosy cider bars with beautiful beer gardens serving delicious food, and a number of festivals too, making the banks of the river an attractive place to spend some time. In the colder months, the region is also an ideal destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Alternatively, visitors can enjoy the more leisurely pace of a boat trip on the river Main.
