Experience art and culture at one of the region's many museums, or at the German Opera on the Rhine and at open-air theatres. The Romans certainly left their mark on Xanten. The Archaeological Park provides an interesting insight into the building plans of Colonia Ulpia Traiana, a Roman town near Xanten that was destroyed and then partly rebuilt, and which was the second largest city in the former province of the Lower Rhine after Cologne. The medieval town of Xanten was built on a burial ground. Under the present cathedral lies the martyr's grave of St. Victor.
On the Lower Rhine, you'll find a number of architectural treasures covering every period from Romanesque to baroque. The region's rich heritage is also reflected in a considerable number of castles and moated palaces, more than most guides could possibly mention, as well as the towers, arches and fortified walls in many towns.
The Meuse-Schwalm-Nette and Kottenforst-Ville nature reserves are ideal destinations for any nature lover. There are numerous signposted footpaths and cycle routes leading to all the main attractions, as well as designated areas for inline skaters. Another real treat are the flower auctions in Straelen, which are based on the ones used in Dutch flower markets.
Popular sporting events in the region include football and ice hockey. Visit this wonderful region to experience the renowned hospitality of the Rhenish people and enjoy a tempting range of Rhenish specialities.
