The Waldecker Land region - a dreamlike destination - is situated between Diemelstadt in the north and Frankenberg in the south, just under 60km from Kassel. It is dominated by dense areas of woodland, mountains of up to 843 metres in altitude, deeply indented valleys with picturesque villages and small medieval towns, an extensive area of lakes and numerous leisure facilities. The region's stunning scenic highlights include the glittering blue "eyes" of Lake Edersee, one of Europe's largest reservoirs, Diemelsee and Twistesee reservoirs and Lake Affold. With so much water, you'll find a whole host of holiday activities on offer from sports to wellness and culture. A network of footpaths, cycle trails and Nordic walking routes lead you through virtually unspoilt countryside to a number of local attractions. This is also an ideal destination for keen tennis players and golfers, as well as skiing enthusiasts and snowboarders who'll find a network of well-maintained cross-country ski trails and challenging pistes in Willingen.
Right on the border with North Rhine-Westphalia lies Lake Diemelsee nature reserve. Here, the landscape features a fascinating blend of meadows and gently rolling, forested mountain slopes. Nature lovers will be enchanted by the rich and diverse flora and fauna. Geologically speaking, Kellerwald-Edersee nature reserve, which is bordered to the north by Bad Wildungen and the Eder hills, is actually in the Rhenish-Westphalian Slate Mountains. Only a part of it is within the Waldecker Land region. With virtually every kind of water sport imaginable, the Waldecker Land region is an ideal destination for any water sports enthusiast. Whether you are taking a diving course on Lake Edersee, sailing on Lake Diemelsee or water-skiing on Lake Twistesee, you can rest assured the water quality is exceptional. Water is also the dominant feature at the Aquapark on Edersee dam, a fantastic waterside play area for young children.
