Museums
Limburg has two real treats for any avid museum-goer - the cathedral treasury and the Diocesan Museum, both exceptional displays with rare exhibits. The most precious exhibit is the famous Staurothek, a reliquary box dating from the 10th century. Limburg's art collections are on display at the art museum in the old town hall. Limburg's cathedral treasury and Diocesan Museum
The cathedral treasury and Diocesan Museum are two most exquisite museums. The cathedral treasury is one of the most impressive examples of Rhenish goldsmith's art and contains liturgical equipment, reliquaries and episcopal insignia. The central exhibit is the famous reliquary box dating from the 10th century, containing several splinters said to be from the cross of Jesus, which is one of the foremost examples of Byzantine goldsmith's work. The Diocesan Museum has a permanent exhibition featuring religious relics and art dating back across twelve centuries. It also has exhibitions on the themes of religious vestments and relic worship. Limburg's art collections
Limburg's art collections consist of items from the former local history museum and art objects from the town hall. The historical town hall and adjoining half-timbered building provide the perfect setting in which to display these works. There are four exhibition rooms containing silhouettes, graphic works and drawings by the internationally renowned silhouette artist Ernst Moritz Engert, as well as a number of paintings, water-colours and drawings by the Expressionist Josef Eberz.
