Places of interest
Limburg is in an idyllic location on the river Lahn. Its old town is full of picturesque half-timbered buildings and dominated by the late Romanesque cathedral with its seven towers. St. George's Cathedral is one of the town's architectural highlights and the site of one of Europe's most remarkable art treasures, Romanesque frescoes dating from the 13th century. St. George's Cathedral
St. George's Cathedral in Limburg was built on the site of the town's former collegiate church at the beginning of the 13th century. The cathedral was largely complete by 1280, having been influenced by a variety of architectural styles. Features such as the twin-towered façade, dwarf gallery and rhombus-shaped roofs on the towers reflect the influence of late Rhenish Romanesque architecture. Restoration of the cathedral's interior has revealed some sensational artistic relics: the colourful original Romanesque frescoes dating from the 13th century are one of Europe's most remarkable art treasures. Half-timbered buildings in the historical old town
The medieval buildings in Limburg's old town are remarkably well preserved and form a breathtakingly beautiful architectural ensemble. The old town centre, once enclosed by walls, is now under a preservation order. There are many pretty half-timbered buildings with ornate decorations and carvings dating from the 13th to 18th centuries. Great importance is given in Limburg to preserving these historic buildings, among them one of Germany's oldest half-timbered houses built in 1296 - Römer 1.
