Places of interest
Metzingen has much more to offer visitors than just outlet stores. The historical town's welcoming atmosphere is probably largely down to its long history of wine making. Appropriately, the town's seven wine presses are its most famous landmark. Other highlights in Metzingen that are well worth a visit include the late Gothic St. Martin's Church and the Old Town Hall. St Martin's Church
The late Gothic St. Martin's Church was built in Metzingen in around 1500. Once a fortified church, until the middle of the 19th century it was completely surrounded by walls of which there are now only remnants. A few magnificent epitaphs remain where the cemetery once stood inside the fortified walls. The church interior was completely renovated in the 1960s and the church was given a new organ in 1979. Seven Wine Presses
The Seven Wine Presses are a remarkable historical attraction dating from the 13th century. The halls were once used to provide protection against the elements for the press beams used to press the grapes. Later, the wine presses were used for storage. At the end of the 20th century, they were completely restored after almost being demolished. Today, the wine presses house the Viticulture Museum, the municipal library, a conference room, a wine shop and various places to eat. Old Town Hall
The Old Town Hall was built in 1668. The impressive façade with its wooden carvings dates from 1913-14 when the town hall underwent extensive restoration. A modern extension was added at the end of the 1980s. Alongside the Old Town Hall, you can see the Marktbrunnen well with its 18th century well pole.
