Suggested excursions
In the area around Neustadt an der Waldnaab there are a number of interesting destinations for visitors to discover. These include the pilgrimage church of St. Felix, an architectural gem and Neustadt's famous landmark. Other impressive attractions include Flossenbürg castle ruins and the idyllic town of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate region, just a few kilometres from Neustadt. St. Felix
Clearly visible from afar, the pilgrimage church of St. Felix is one of the most famous landmarks in Neustadt an der Waldnaab. Around the end of the 17th century, a statue of St. Simon Stilitis stood on the site where the church is now located. Later, a small wooden chapel was built around the statue to protect it from the wind and weather. In 1735 this was converted into a small church building. Flossenbürg
The ruins of Flossenbürg Castle, built in around 1100, sit in splendour overlooking the town of the same name. A path leads up to the castle, which is accessible all year round. Flossenbürg is well known for its abundance of granite. Granite was quarried on Burgberg hill until the 1960s when it was stopped to protect the castle ruins. The onion-shaped granite beds can still be seen today at the foot of the ruins. The extensive excavations and renovations here are as impressive as the spectacular views. Weiden
Weiden is idyllically situated on the historical Golden Road, and on the Glass Route and Porcelain Route. With its charming gardens and historical sites, the town is a great place to visit in both summer and winter. Its main attractions include the Old Town Hall dating from the 16th century, the old town walls and the baroque municipal parish church of St. Michael.
