Nature & greenery

Set in the beautiful Northern Upper Palatinate Forest nature reserve, Neustadt an der Waldnaab is surrounded by spectacular scenery. There are many opportunities for all types of leisure activities, especially hiking, cycling or leisurely walks in the wild and romantic Waldnaab valley.

Bocklweg
The Bocklweg is the longest cycle path along disused railway lines in Bavaria. Neustadt an der Waldnaab was linked to the railway network in 1886. Historical steam locomotives travelled along the route from Neustadt an der Waldnaab to Eslarn until 1974. Eleven years later the line was officially closed. Today, the 55-km stretch of railway line has been reopened as a cycle path.

Northern Upper Palatinate Forest Nature Reserve
The Northern Upper Palatinate Forest nature reserve is situated on the border with the Czech Republic in north-east Bavaria. Nature lovers and anyone looking for a relaxing break will love its dense forests, streams, ponds and river meadows. Villages and towns blend harmoniously into the landscape. The nature reserve was established to help preserve the unique nature and culture of the region and to ensure that visitors can continue to enjoy this very special recreation spot.

Waldnaab Valley
The Waldnaab valley is a fascinating nature conservation area in the heart of the Northern Upper Palatinate Forest. Two historical castles, Neuhaus and Falkenberg, are situated at either end of this mountain valley. The romantic riverbanks are lined with spruce, beech and alder trees, lush fern fronds and colourful flowers. Dramatic rock formations jut out of the riverbed, causing the bubbling water to splash over the stones here and there.
