Nature & greenery
Despite being an industrial region, the Ruhr has no shortage of lush countryside and, with its 1,400-hectare park, green spaces and woods, Oberhausen is no exception to the rule. Kaisergarten gardens and Hiesfeld Forest offer plenty of tranquil, tree-shaded spots. The Sea Life centre is an opportunity to see Mother Nature at her most exciting - with a sensational underwater world. Kaisergarten gardens
Kaisergarten gardens are often referred to as the "green heart" of Oberhausen. With woods, lawns, ponds and an animal enclosure, the gardens are ideal for a whole range of outdoor leisure activities and particularly popular with families and people escaping the big cities. For younger visitors there is a petting zoo, while adults can enjoy miniature golf, tennis and archery. Sea Life
For an exciting journey into a fascinating underwater world, visit the Sea Life centre in Oberhausen. There is an amazing giant seawater aquarium with 20,000 species, including sharks and rays, and 40 other tanks depicting a variety of different habitats, all of which have been designed with great attention to detail. The main highlight is the 1.5 million-litre Atlantic tank with a 20 metre-long glass tunnel running through it. Hiesfeld Forest
The Hiesfeld Forest nature conservation area is an idyllic mixed forest in the north of the town, forming the south-west section of the Hohe Mark nature reserve. A walking tour along the Rotbach river, which meanders through the romantic valley, is always a delight.
