The Reuter Villa is home to the Reuter Wagner Museum, the most comprehensive collection relating to Richard Wagner after Bayreuth. Most of the objects on display were purchased from a private museum in Vienna in 1895. Richard Wagner was so inspired by Wartburg Castle in 1842 that he used it as the setting for his opera Tannhäuser. Another section of the building is dedicated to the Low German poet, Fritz Reuter.Automobile Museum
Set on the site of Eisenach's former car manufacturing plant, the Automobile Museum documents more than 100 years of car manufacturing in Eisenach. The "Automobile World Eisenach" exhibition consists of twelve sections illustrating Eisenach's car manufacturing history. Each exhibition "island" shows a specific period in time with the vehicles produced in Eisenach at that point. Along with historical items used in car manufacturing, the museum also depicts living conditions in the different eras and the history of the legendary Wartburg car.
