Places of interest
The centre of Eisenach has a wealth of historical buildings and museums. Some of the most well known places of interest are Luther's House, Bach's House on Frauenplan and the market square with the town hall and palace in the old quarter. Luther's House
Situated on Lutherplatz, this is one of the oldest timber-framed houses in the town. Martin Luther (1483-1546) lived here while attending the Latin school between 1498 and 1501. Today, Luther's House is a museum dedicated to the work of the Reformer, with the Luther room and a number of exhibits recalling his life. Old quarter and market
Situated in the heart of the old quarter, the market square has a number of remarkable town houses. The late-Gothic town hall (1508) was originally used as a wine cellar. The Thuringian Museum is housed in the baroque palace (approx. 1750) on the north side. The parish church of St. George is also situated on the market square. Martin Luther preached in this hall church on 2 May 1521, even though he had already been placed under an imperial ban. Palace
The palace was built in the baroque style for Duke Ernst August von Sachsen-Weimar in around 1750. Housed in one of the wings, the Thuringian Museum features Thuringian faience earthenware and porcelain from the 18th and 19th century as well as items produced by the Thuringian glassworks. The former royal stables are now used for special exhibitions.
