Museums
The Hechingen-Stein Roman Open-Air Museum houses one of the most important Roman archaeological sites in southern Germany. Covering 4 hectares, it contains several settlements which have been preserved in excellent condition and are open to the public. Roman open-air museum
In the 1970s and 1980s a Roman estate from between the 1st and 3rd century AD was unearthed in an area of woodland just outside the small village of Stein, near Hechingen. The remains of the Roman villa rustica have been preserved in excellent condition and include living accommodation and outbuildings, a complete wall with gatehouse and even a small temple area. The open-air museum brings the Roman era to life with the help of archaeological finds and reconstructions. Visitors can even take part in these by grinding grain and baking flat unleavened bread in the reconstructed mill and bakehouse. In contrast to other archaeological sites the museum has created, with the help of experts, replicas of buildings on the original site, in order to produce as accurate a picture as possible of life at that time.
