This massive, 15th-century fortification with its twin towers is Lübeck's signature attraction and a reminder of the proud past of the town once regarded as the "Queen of the Hanseatic League". A number of Lübeck companies such as the marzipan manufacturer Niederegger have integrated it into their company logo.

Reminder of a proud past
The massive building with its two towers, all that remains of the town fortifications, is Lübeck's most famous attraction. Holsten Gate, at the western entrance to the old quarter, is one of Germany's best-known and finest examples of a late medieval town gate. A number of products such as Lübeck marzipan have it as their symbol. It also houses the Museum of Town History.

The Castle Monastery Cultural Forum is in a restored Dominican monastery. St. Katharine's Museum Church has a frieze of figures by Ernst Barlach and Gerhard Marcks. Amazing puppets and marionettes from many different eras and from all over the world can be seen at the Puppet Theatre Museum.

Lübeck's museums cover a broad spectrum, from the ecclesiastical art of St. Anne's art gallery and museum and the impressive art collections of the Behnhaus and Drägerhaus Museum to the history of marzipan at the marzipan salon.
