Art and culture are an integral part of life in the region. In neighbouring Saarbrücken, the Saarland Museum with its Old Collection and Modern Gallery features important works from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century. The Old Collection in the Saarland Museum boasts around 450 works of art from south-west Germany, Alsace and Lorraine, dating from the early Middle Ages to 1900. The Modern Gallery features a collection of important 20th century art with a special emphasis on German and French impressionist painting. Works by painters of the Bridge movement and the Blue Rider school, such as the "The Little Blue Horse" by Franz Marc are among the collection's highlights.
