Nature & greenery
Völklingen lies in the picturesque Saar Valley, the slopes of which are covered by large expanses of woodland, perfect for walking and cycling. A remarkable natural feature of the region is the Saar Bow in the area between Merzig and Saarburg, the River Saar loops back on itself, creating a bow-like shape. Saar Bow
The Saar Bow Saarland's most famous landmark is a particularly spectacular natural attraction, where the River Saar has carved a course through the hard rock strata and winds its way impressively through the surrounding dense forests. Cloef viewpoint offers magnificent views of the Saar Bow, which you can also explore by boat or on the well-maintained walking and cycling trails. Saar-Hunsrück Nature Reserve
The Saar-Hunsrück Nature Reserve is one of Germany's largest and most beautiful nature reserves. Its magnificent countryside consists of woodland, meadows, river valleys, vineyards and unusual rock formations. Cultural attractions include reminders of the days of the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages. Whether you are on a walking or cycling tour, a family holiday or a gourmet break, there's something for everyone here. Saar Cycle Route
The 80km Saar Cycle Route, which has no major gradients, runs alongside the River Saar up to the point where it flows into the Moselle. Take a breather and rest your legs on one of the numerous benches along the moorings in Völklingen, which provides great views of the Völklingen Ironworks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Near Mettlach, the famous Saar Bow, where the river has carved a deep valley into the densely-wooded hills, is a truly wondrous sight.
