Permanent exhibitions offer an interesting insight into the city's history and a range of specific themes. A fantastic art collection is housed in the City Gallery. The city's art collection was started 100 years ago as the result of a local initiative. The first addition in 1896 was a collection of valuable prints from the 16th-19th century that belonged to the Karlsruhe lawyer, Ferdinand Siegel. The art collection now includes around 15,000 works of art including paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photos, installations and objects that have been bought, bequeathed or donated.Majolica pottery and museum
The museum documents the history of the important Karlsruhe Majolica manufacturing works from its founding in 1901 to the present day. The spectrum of works on display ranges from the early period (Hans Thoma, Wilhelm Süs) through to major ceramic artists of the post-1945 period. Suitably located in the city where inventors Karl Freiherr Drais von Sauerbronn (1785-1851) and Karl Benz (1844-1929) were born, Karlsruhe's Transport Museum takes you on a journey through around 200 years of travel by road and rail. The museum's vehicle and bicycle section contains a range of exhibits from the railbike through to the modern-day bicycle as well as motorcycles and cars. Other highlights of the collection include a number of small cars from the post-war economic boom period. In the railway section, you can see one of Germany's largest model railways featuring trains from a variety of different periods.
