Münster is the city of the "Peace of Westphalia", with a long tradition of European culture and learning. Münster's historic old quarter is packed with cultural history – at the beautiful Prinzipalmarkt square, St. Paul's Cathedral with its astronomical clock dating back to 1543, Salzstrasse with its reminders of Hanseatic tradition and buildings by baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun. Schlaun is also responsible for the Stadtschloss palace, the Rüschhaus, Erbdrostenhof Palace and the Church of St. Clement's.

Münster's more than 35 museums include a leprosy museum, a bible museum and a carnival museum. The Museum of Lacquer Art is the only one of its kind in Europe. Every ten years, the internationally acclaimed "sculpture projects" take over the town with a representative cross-section of urban public art.
