The town walls with their battlements and mighty bastions form a protective circle around the precious relics of bygone ages. The Spitalbastei at the southern gate is particularly impressive. Leonhard Weidmann created this double bulwark in the town's fortified walls in a figure of eight shape with seven towers, a portcullis and a drawbridge. The keystone on the outer arch bears the date 1586, Weidmann's initials and a Latin inscription which reads "Peace to those who enter, health to those who leave".Gothic St. James's church
Rothenburg's foremost ecclesiastic building contains the famous Altar of the Holy Blood by Tilman Riemenschneider and the Twelve Apostles Altar by Friedrich Herlin. The window in the east chancel is also notable.Plönlein square
