Events
Many of Weimar's attractions have a musical theme. The Bach Festival, the International Organ Festival and the Art Festival are just a few of the highlights on Weimar's calendar of events. Goethe's birthday on 28 August
Weimar has a tradition of celebrating Goethe's birthday, which is on 28 August. Goethes house in Frauenplan is specially decorated and opened to the public late into the evening. The courtyard and garden and Goethe's summer house in the Park on the Ilm also stay open late and concerts or Goethe-themed events take place in the Palace courtyard. Weimar Zwiebelmarkt Fair
Weimar's history comes to life for three days over the second weekend in October. Each year, the Weimar Zwiebelmarkt (Onion Market) Fair, which has been held since 1653, takes over the whole of the historical old town and attracts around 350,000 visitors. As well as strings of onions and other products involving onions, fruit, vegetables, spices and handicrafts are now sold. Weimar Christmas Market
The atmospheric setting for Weimar's Christmas market is provided by the festively illuminated old quarter and the German National Theatre on Theaterplatz. The town hall is transformed into an Advent calendar, with Father Christmas helping children open a new window every day. The market has stalls selling Thuringian craftwork and carved items from the Erzgebirge mountains.
