The city of Dachau, only 20 minutes from Munich by train, celebrated its 1,200th anniversary last year and is positioned like no other German city in a sensitive balance between culture and contemporary history. The name Dachau is known the world over as the location of the first concentration camp in Bavaria. Today, it is the city's uttermost priority to bear in remembrance the events of the past and to work against them ever being forgotten. Later this year it will open a "Path of Remembrance" featuring information boards between the railway station and the concentration camp, where historically the prisoners walked. Culture is also increasingly vital in Dachau and international concerts take place in the resplendent surrounds of the Renaissance Schloss Dachau. Dachau's Summer of Music takes place annually in June and July, and in August Dachau holds its traditional folk festival. Guided Tours are available through the old town, Schloss and the Concentration Camp Memorial Site and start from just EUR 18 per person. Weekend offers with two overnights start from EUR 53 per person.
