For King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the French "Sun King" Louis XIV was the embodiment of absolute monarchy. In the New Palace of Herrenchiemsee, designed by Georg Dollmann and Julius Hofmann, he fulfilled his long-cherished dream of building a "New Versailles" as a symbol of absolutism and an independent creation in the Historicist style. The palace park designed by Carl von Effner also features motifs from Versailles.
In the King Ludwig II-Museum, the story of Ludwig II's life and early death is documented with paintings, busts and historic photographs, as well as memorabilia such as his christening gown and coronation robe.
