Bamberg's Old Town, a 1,000-year-old district boasting over 2,000 historic monuments, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site for ten years. In addition to being of great general interest, Bamberg has great offerings for the Catholic pilgrim. The Imperial Cathedral (Kaiserdom) and its four towers can be admired from most places within the city. Inside are great treasures, like sculptures by Tilmann Riemenschneider and the Altar of St. Mary from 1523. The Benedictine Cloister of St. Michael was founded as early as 1015, and was grandly rebuilt in the Late Gothic style after a fire in 1610. Among other wonders, the ceiling is enchantingly decorated with flowers and healing herbs, the so-called "Garden of Heaven". Click below to learn more about Bamberg!
