The Gothic cathedral St. Peter & Mary (World Heritage Site since 1998) with its characteristic spires is Cologne's landmark. It houses the golden Shrine of the Three Magi, as well as numerous other outstanding art treasures, such as the Gero crucifix, the first monumental crucifix in Northern Europe (from before 1000), and an altar painting of the city's patron saints by Stephan Lochner (from around 1450).
