The annual pilgrimage season begins with the opening of the pilgrimage portals of the basilica on May 1st, and it ends on November 1st. More than 800,000 people from all over the world come to the Chapel Square every year to see the many sacred sites here, the highlight of which is the icon of the "Trösterin der Betrübten", or "Consoler of the Grieving".
