Dresden's Striezelmarkt dates back to 1434. Its name derives from Hefestriezel, the sweet delicacy which, centuries later, is known as Dresden Christstollen (German christmas cake). The Christmas tree decorated with lights, Pflaumentoffel (prune men) and the tallest Christmas Christmas pyramid in the world (46 foot) give this market an inimitable appeal.
In Berlin many small and large Christmas markets, each with its very own atmosphere, invite everyone for a joyful pre-Christmas time. The Gendarmenmarkt is one of the most beautiful squares in Europe and is the exquisite setting for one of Berlin's many Christmas markets, which will whisk you away to a magical Christmas world full of scrumptious treats and fairy lights. There is a great program of cultural events and plenty more besides.
Erfurt's Christmas market is the largest in Thuringia and one of the loveliest in the whole of Germany. Erfurt's medieval old town is centered on the Domplatz (Cathedral Square) which is a perfect romantic setting for Christmas' unique atmosphere. Highlights of this market are an enormous 82 foot Christmas tree decorated with hundreds of candles, a 40 foot high Christmas Pyramid and a nativity scene with hand carved almost life-sized figurines.
