Schmalkalden

Schmalkalden's "Herrscheklasmarkt" takes place every year in the romantic old quarter, a listed site of historical interest with half-timbered buildings, ancient stone houses, the town church of St. George and Wilhelmsburg Castle. On the first Friday in December "Herrscheklas" (St. Nicholas) rides through the town in his carriage, handing out gingerbread, accompanied by elves with lanterns.
