When Christmas carols ring out, the air is filled with the aromas of glühwein and gingerbread, and the shops and department stores are festively decorated, then it's time for the Christmas market in Erfurt. The town's cathedral square is lit up by a Christmas tree that stands 25 metres tall. Right in the middle is the nativity scene with 14 hand-carved, almost life-size wooden figures and a magical fairytale forest. Standing at a full twelve metres, the Christmas pyramid with its traditional Erzgebirge characters tells the story of those who have shaped Erfurt's history. Let the Father Christmases and Christmas angels whisk you off into the beautiful, historical old quarter, where you might well stumble across the Floral Christmas exhibition in the underground cellars of Erfurt Cathedral.
