Heidelberg's Christmas market, a perfect blend of tradition and romance, is spread out across seven squares in the old quarter. There is a wealth of magic and old-fashioned charm to discover among the festively decorated stalls, which begin as soon as you reach pedestrianised Bismarckplatz square, so you can dive straight into the action. The stalls continue on Anatomiegarten square and Universitätsplatz, the main location for the Christmas market. Then it's on to the market square, where you can have your photograph taken with Father Christmas. The prettiest place of all is Kornmarkt square with its Madonna statue. The inner courtyard of Heidelberg's famous castle provides the picturesque setting for an exquisite Christmas market with an eye-catching Advent calendar. Beneath the castle, on Karlsplatz square, you can hear excited voices and lively music on the 'Christmas on Ice' ice-skating rink. (skates available for hire). The Christmas-themed guided tours every Advent Saturday at 6.30pm and the 'Winter's Dream' package show you Heidelberg at its festive best.
