Braunschweig's medieval Burgplatz square with its cathedral and castle is transformed into a glittering Christmas wonderland during the festive season. More than 130 lovingly decorated stalls present locally made crafts, including ceramics, glass and wooden gifts, candles and tree decorations. Christmas carols, instrumental music, plays in a festive setting and concerts by Braunschweig's cathedral choir academy - what could be finer? Kids can look forward to a puppet show in the regional museum, a fairytale train and carousels. Light effects and installations make the historical castle moat look simply amazing. Also visually stunning is the stylised recreation of an old arm of the Oker river, seasonally decorated, with 'rafts' that offer a leisurely opportunity for a chat. For magnificent views of this picture-perfect Christmas scene, climb the 61m town hall tower, either on a guided tour or under your own steam.
