"Fling wide the door, unbar the gate" - the opening line of a popular German carol hints at the seasonal entertainment on offer in Hanseatic Lübeck. In the old quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage site, five brick-built churches provide the backdrop for evocative Christmas concerts. Maritime Lübeck has no fewer than seven Christmas markets: the famous historical market outside St. Mary's Church and the family market on the banks of the Trave river (22 Nov-23 Dec, 11am-9pm), the two arts and crafts markets in the Hospital of the Holy Ghost (26 Nov-6 Dec) and St. Peter's Church (25 Nov-12 Dec, 10am-7pm) and the Christmas markets on Rathausmarkt, Koberg square and on Breite Strasse (22 Nov-30 Dec). 'Christmas with the Buddenbrooks' gives literature fans a live taste of Thomas Mann's classic book (26 & 27 Nov, 3 & 4 Dec, 10 & 11 Dec) and there is a fairytale forest for kids at St. Mary's Church (22 Nov-23 Dec, 11am-9pm).
