Held on Theaterplatz square, the Christkindlmarkt in Ingolstadt is a cosy affair with 50 festive wooden stalls, traditional Bavarian food and the wonderful smell of baked apples and glühwein wafting through the air. It is also one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany, the privilege being granted by Duke Albrecht V back in 1570. Local brass bands and trumpeters provide a festive musical accompaniment. The Ingolstadt Nativity trail takes you around the town's churches and museums, where you can find all manner of different Nativity scenes from a variety of periods.
