An insiders' tip for the festive season: on the four weekends before Christmas, families in Marktredwitz open their door to visitors as part of a public exhibition of Nativity scenes. The larger, more extensive versions are particularly impressive: they can cover up to 40 square metres and show people at work and at play alongside the classic depictions of Mary and Joseph at the manger. There's an incredible variety of scenes, all telling their own little stories. Outside the historical town hall, the small but delightful Christmas market basks in the glow of 10,000 fairy lights and a Christmas tree adorned with genuine porcelain decorations. The town hall doubles as a giant Advent calendar, while the air is filled with the sound of choirs and brass bands who also play out the market on 24 December from beneath the Christmas tree. Then, on 31 December, the market returns for one day only and culminates in a firework extravaganza to see in the New Year.
