Pay a visit to Monschau during the festive season and the first thing you see are the streets and lanes adorned with garlands, illuminated trees and fairy lights. The Christmas market with its cosy atmosphere beckons on the delightful market square. Beneath the towers of the castle there is an enchanting living Nativity scene in a straw-thatched stable. In the market square musical accompaniment is provided by trumpeters in historical costume and alpenhorn players, while a musical shepherd features in the landscaped Nativity scene at St Michael's Church. In 1999, the Christmas market in Monschau was named as one of the most romantic in North Rhine-Westphalia by the Rheinische Post newspaper.
