Zwickau, in the foothills of the Erzgebirge mountains, is home to one of Saxony's most popular Christmas markets. Every year, the town is bathed in the glow of a giant Christmas tree and a traditional Christmas pyramid. Zwickau has even been voted one of the ten most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany. Set in the heart of Zwickau's old quarter, surrounded by lovely old gabled houses, the stalls offer a wide variety of seasonal wares with plenty of opportunities to browse and linger. Every day at 4.30pm children can meet Father Christmas. The absolute highlight of the diverse programme of music takes place on 11 December: the miners' bands parade is a time-honoured tradition with marching bands and traditional costumes. Starting at 2pm, around 300 miners begin their procession at the Globus department store and head towards the town centre. The grand finale at 2.45pm is the miners' concert in the cathedral square in front of the priests' houses.
