The International Christmas market in Essen has 240 stalls packed with fantastic gift ideas and culinary specialities from all over the world. One of the reasons it appears so festive is the glittering canopy of 45,000 lights and numerous other illuminations. Journey back in time at the medieval market or watch a Nativity play enacted by mime artists at the cathedral. Top tips: the Adveniat candlemaking house and the life-size Nativity scene featuring real farmyard animals.
