Every year at Christmas, Karlsruhe is transformed into a fairytale wonderland. Romantic horse-drawn carriage rides and guided walks are a great way to see the city, famous for its radial layout and great shopping. The Christkindlesmarkt bathes the whole market square in a seasonal glow. You'll find delicious treats, a giant glühwein pyramid and creative gift ideas at the craft stalls. For a more active way to get into the Christmas spirit, head to Friedrichsplatz square, where a colourfully illuminated outdoor rink, one of Germany's largest, beckons skaters to take to the ice for skating or curling. Close by, the little ones can enjoy a trip on a small steam train through a magical children's world. The medieval Christmas market, held at Karlsburg Castle in nearby Durlach, whisks you back to days of yore, with street performers, musicians, campfires and German food specialities such as Spiessbraten. Tram service every 10 minutes.
