Christmas Markets in the North of Germany

Although the north of Germany region may not have Germany's oldest Christmas markets it does have some of its most enchanting.

Bremen's Christmas market, with over 170 colorful stalls, takes place in the historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, the maritime spectacular 'Schlachte Zauber' brings a golden glow to the riverside in December. Traditional handicrafts and medieval-style taverns, lit up with wood fires and torch lights, are a magnet for the entire waterfront with snow-covered chalet-style stalls offering nourishing delicacies and sizzling fish specialties.

The annual Christmas markets of Hanseatic Luebeck take place in the old quarter around the historical town hall and Koberg, with fairy lights and Christmas trees adorning the streets. There is an enchanting Christmas fairytale forest outside St. Mary's Church with more than 20 lovingly handmade stalls which tell the stories of the Brothers Grimm. In addition there is also an excellent craft market in the vaults of the old Holy Spirit Hospital plus don't miss the Iceworld snow and ice sculpture festival in the heart of the town centre.

During Advent, Hamburg's Town Hall provides the grand setting for the city's most charming Christmas market. One hundred merchants set up their shops on Hamburg's largest urban square. Roast apples vs. hotdogs, hand-crafted items vs. mass-produced merchandise and the quaint cottages designed by Bernhard Paul, director of the famed nostalgic Circus Roncalli, set this Christmas market apart from run-of-the-mill seasonal activities elsewhere.
